Vessel was engaged in illegal sea otter hunting when it was struck by a gale andblinding snow storm a few miles off Cape Alitak. This storm (called the Great Easter Galeof April 13th) caused the vessel to lose its bearings and carried away the sails andrudder. It was driven aground on a submerged reef off cape Alitak and smashed to pieces.Four crewmen were lost at sea, including the cook who was washed overboard, drowned, andin a bizarre twist of fate, was then deposited in a cabin berth.
