Tacoma ship 5/19/1918 Departed for Nushagak, AK with cannery workers and supplies. Off Nushagak, vesselencountered ice and searched for many days for an opening. On May 19, while tacking towardport in an open lead, the Tacoma was crushed by ice. The ice broke the masts and bowspritand put the main mast through the hull. Vessel quickly filled and sank. Crew andpassengers escaped to nearby ships also frozen fast in the ice. One man died trying toreach the St Nicholas. off entrance to Ugashik Bay, Bristol Bay 1,738/1,671
