Medicaid eligibility is limited to individuals who fall into specified categories. The federal statute identifies over 25 different eligibility categories for which federal funds are available. These categories can be classified in to five broad coverage groups:

What Medicaid Covers:

Medicaid is a state administered program. Each state sets its own guidelines subject to federal rules and guidelines. Certain services must be covered by the states in order to receive federal funds. Other services are optional and are elected by states.

State Children's Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP)

The State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) offers health insurance plans for children, up to age 19, who are not already insured. Families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid may be able to qualify for SCHIP.  Read more about SCHIP
