Help with Using Genetics Home Reference

How do I get started?

  • Start at the home page and explore Genetics Home Reference.
  • Open the Handbook to learn about genes, inheritance of genetic conditions, genetic testing, gene therapy, and ongoing research.
  • Use Search or Browse to find information about a certain condition, gene, or chromosome.
  • Locate directories, information for patients and families, or other resources.

How do I find information about my genetic disease or condition?

You can use Search, at the top of every page on Genetics Home Reference. You can also browse to find conditions, genes, chromosomes, and glossary definitions.

What if I'm not familiar with medical language?

Although Genetics Home Reference uses consumer-friendly language wherever possible, some medical terms are included. You can use Glossary or Search for definitions of unfamiliar medical and genetics terms. In addition, the Handbook explains the fundamentals of genetics, which may be helpful for those without a science background.

How do I use Search?

Search can locate conditions, genes, chromosomes, and glossary definitions.

You may use the Search page, or the search box and "Go" button at the top of every page.

See Search Tips about quoting exact phrases and other search techniques.
