Maritime Energy Technologies Program
As the principal
advocate within Government for U.S. maritime interests, MARAD has
initiated a Maritime Energy Technologies Program. The Program seeks
to investigate and demonstrate the potential for new technologies
and fuels to improve marine power plant efficiency and reduce air
emissions. In addition, the Program provides guidance and
information on related regulatory and policy issues. The Program
actively seeks partnership with industry, other Government agencies,
and academia.
We are pleased to
report that Energy Technologies Newsletter No. 4 is now
available. This issue focuses on recent developments regarding
energy-related improvements in the maritime industry.
A featured
article, contributed by Eidesvik AS of Norway, describes the
Viking Energy, the first cargo/offshore support vessel powered
by liquefied natural gas with dual-fuel engines. The project has
received much attention as an innovative effort toward more
environmental-friendly ships.
Our next
Newsletter will be a special Fuel Cell and Hybrid Vessel edition.
The subsequent issue will focus on large cargo vessels. We also
continue to invite timely and informative articles from our readers.
