ISO 14000 -- The Environmental Protection Agency

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to implement a new environmental reporting system called Key Identifier. The project will be modeled after the income tax filing procedure. The reporting facility would fill out a one or two page form requiring basic information. Each individual compliance report would then become an attachment much like a tax schedule.

Each facility included in the database would be assigned an ID number, contact name, facility name and address, and industry code. Eventually the EPA wants to implement a "one-stop" process by putting all of the information about each company on-line. This system would give the Environmental Health Safety managers the ability to access each other's information. The goal of the Key Identifiers is to make the information more useful. The EPA is calling for comments dealing with how the information should be gathered in the Key Identifiers project.
