the International Collaborative Effort on Automating Mortality Statistics,
Volume II. (PHS) 2002-1252. The main objective of the International Collaborative Effort (ICE) on Automating Mortality Statistics, Volume II, was to develop recommendations and guidelines to improve European quality and comparability of cause-of-death statistics. This project focused mainly on the coding stage and on the use of Automated Coding Systems (ACS) for medical cause of death. This present volume contains presentations delivered at the second plenary meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, during September 7-10, 1999. The mission of the ICE is (1) to share knowledge and experience of automated systems for coding mortality information, (2) to develop and improve existing automated systems through international collaboration, (3) to facilitate the transition to ICD-10 for mortality, and (4) to establish mechanisms for technical support of automated systems. At the second ICE, over 70 participants from 25 countries came together to discuss these issues. Keywords: Mortality, International Collaborative Effort (ICE), ICD-10, Automated Classification of Medical Entities (ACME)
