The NODC's 1998 Dept. of Commerce Award Winners

Syd Levitus, Director of NODC's Ocean Climate Laboratory, received the Department of Commerce Gold Medal jointly with Tom Karl and Jonathan Overpeck "for world-class scientific contributions which advanced the understanding of the climate system and climate variability". Jonathan Overpeck is a paleogeologist at NOAA's National Geophsyical Data Center (NGDC) and Tom Karl is the Director at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center(NCDC), respectively.

Syd Levitus Medal

Dr. Elaine Collins, Janice Beattie, Dorothy Anderson, and Skip Theberge received the Dept. of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for their outstanding contributions in creating WINDandSEA, a unique Internet site for customer service that increased the effectiveness of the NOAA Central Library.

Library Medal

J. David Hardy, Jr. received the Dept. of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for his work on the development of the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). ITIS was the recipient of the Vice Presidents Hammer Award in 1998. Dave has worked for NODC for 20 years.
