FOIA/Privacy Act Positions Available at Federal Agencies

The Office of Information and Privacy has learned of the following Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act-related positions that currently are available at federal agencies:

• The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a newly created component of the Department of Transportation, has multiple openings for both attorneys and paralegals (or other access professionals) who have experience in working with the Freedom of Information Act.

The attorney positions are located in the Transportation Security Administration's Office of the Deputy Chief Counsel for General Law. Anyone interested in these positions should contact Lyn M. Rahilly, an attorney in the TSA's Office of the Chief Counsel, at (202) 493-1228.

The paralegal/access professional positions will be located in the Transportation Security Administration's newly formed FOIA office. These openings will be formally announced on the Transportation Security Administration's Web site (www.tsa.gov) soon.

Because this new sub-agency is an "excepted service" government entity, its salary scales are different from those of the ordinary government salary schedule; they are set in "pay bands" that can range higher than regular GS grades. Additional information can be obtained through the Transportation Security Administration's Web site (www.tsa.gov).

• The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is looking for someone to work on a three-month, nonreimbursable detail to help cover its governmentwide policy responsibilities under the Privacy Act of 1974 and also matters pertaining to FOIA fees. The position is in the Information Policy and Technology Branch of OMB's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). OMB prefers an attorney for this position, but is willing to consider other access professionals as well. Anyone interested in this position should contact Jasmeet Seehra, Deputy Director of OIRA's Information Policy and Technology Branch, at (202) 395-3123.

The Office of Information and Privacy is posting these notices in an effort to facilitate the hiring of highly qualified attorneys and access professionals to work in the FOIA and Privacy Act areas throughout the federal government. The potential value of doing so was discussed at a FOIA Officers Conference held by OIP late last year, and this is the first in what is expected to be a regular series of such postings.

OIP encourages the FOIA personnel at all federal agencies to bring FOIA and Privacy Act-related vacancies to its attention for prompt inclusion in this FOIA Post feature.   (posted 5/9/02)
