HHS RELEASES COMPILATION OF CHILD WELL-BEING IN THE U.S.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today released its first comprehensive collection of national statistics on the health and welfare of children in the United States. The new compilation includes measures in more than 80 key areas.

The document, Trends in the Well-Being of America's Children and Youth: 1996, brings together data from sources throughout the federal government regarding the economic security, health status, social development, and education of children and youth in the U.S. Statistics contained in the 342-page volume have previously been reported, however the publication represents the first time that HHS has assembled the information in a single document.

Part 1 of the report was prepared by Child Trends, Inc., of Washington, D.C. It presents a wide array of data on children and families, presenting recent historical trends as well as analyses by age, race, ethnicity, gender, and family income.

Part 2 of the report contains an essay and statistical presentation, "Population Change and the Family Environment of Children," by Donald J. Hernandez, Ph.D., of the U.S. Census Bureau, currently working with the National Academy of Sciences.

The report will be available electronically on the HHS Internet web page at www.hhs.gov (see "What's New"). In addition, copies of the report may be purchased from the U.S. Government Printing Office.
