Statement by Donna E. Shalala on "Substance Abuse and the American Woman"

I applaud the release today of "Substance Abuse and The American Woman," a study by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University; and I commend CASA president Joseph A. Califano for his efforts to combat the problem of substance abuse in this country.

The new CASA study underscores the critical importance of developing treatment and prevention strategies for girls and women targeted to their unique needs. Substance abuse among girls and women is a serious problem, but government cannot solve it alone. It will take a sustained effort by everyone -- families, schools, religious organizations, the media, businesses, community groups, and individuals -- to turn this problem around.
