HCFA Awards New Medicare Peer Review Contract For Hawaii

The Health Care Financing Administration recently announced the selection of the Montana-Wyoming Foundation for Medical Care (MWFMC) as the new Medicare Peer Review Organization for Hawaii. It will be responsible for reviewing and promoting effective utilization and quality improvement strategies for care provided to Medicare beneficiaries.

The contract, which includes review of care and quality improvement in American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, runs from Oct. 1, 1996 through Sept. 30, 1999, and amounts to more than $4.6 million. MWFMC will establish offices in Honolulu.

The company has been doing medical peer review and education for the Medicare program in Montana and Wyoming since 1972. Selection of MWFMC culminates a 9-month competitive procurement process, and was based primarily on the cost and technical superiori ty of its proposal.

"HCFA looks forward to this expanded partnership with the Montana-Wyoming Foundation for Medical Care to ensure the best possible quality of care for its Medicare beneficiaries," said HCFA Administrator Bruce C. Vladeck.
