Today in the Department of Defense, Sept. 16-18, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is traveling in Asia through Sept. 22. See the background briefing for an overview of his trip.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Washington through the weekend. On Monday, Sept. 18, Deputy Secretary de Leon travels to Long Beach, Calif., where he will speak the next day to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. See the advisory for details.

Naval Station Norfolk, Va., is participating in various commemorative events this weekend associated with the 50th anniversary of the Korean War. See the "Hampton Roads Remembers" web page for details.

Four Navy ships are in East Timor through Sept. 16 to provide humanitarian assistance and to reinforce U.S. presence in the region. See the Seventh Fleet news release for details.

Cornerstone 00-2, a combined engineering exercise with Moldova, ends Sept. 16. See the news release for details.

The New York Jets honor America's armed forces with a Military Appreciation Day at Giant's Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sept. 17. See the advisory for details.

CENTRASBAT 2000, a multinational peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance field exercise in Almaty, Kazakhstan, continues through Sept. 18. See the news release and the Central Command web page for details.

The next Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Cabanas 2000, a joint multinational peacekeeping exercise in Cordoba, Argentina, continues through Sept. 21. See the news release for more details.
