U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
Develops an On-Line National Resource Directory

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention has released its new on-line national prevention resource guide. "A Citizen's Guide to Alcohol, Tobacco, Other Drugs, and HIV/AIDS Resources" is a new feature of PREVline, the electronic communications system dedicated to exchanging ideas and information concerning alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) problem prevention.

Utilizing the power of the information superhighway and CSAP's creative technology, the citizen's guide is designed to serve customers, empower communities and reduce spending. SAMHSA has emphasized these key elements that have been outlined in the vice president's National Performance Review office's efforts in reinventing government. The citizenþs guide underscores the importance given by the administration to local, state and federal groups working together to reduce ATOD related problems and the resultant social, health and economic costs to society. Since it is on-line, it can be updated regularly with the most current information.

The citizen's guide contains data from the local and state level (including Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and other jurisdictions), Mexico and Canada, as well as federal agencies, national organizations and foundations. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's expertise with state and community programs ensures that communities can access this information to help them reduce ATOD and HIV/AIDS problems within their neighborhoods and beyond, and retrieve what they need to get involved in prevention efforts.

Specific features of the citizen's guide include:

"A Citizen's Guide to Alcohol, Tobacco, Other Drugs, and HIV/AIDS Resources" is available via PREVline which can be accessed on the Internet (telnet:ncadi.health.org / then press the ENTER key / User-Id: new) or by direct dial-up (telephone 301-770-0850, User Id: new).
