Energy Efficient T8 Fluorescent Lamps

1. If you are still using T12 fluorescent lighting as the major light source in your buildings, it is time to consider upgrading to the T8 fluorescent lamps. T8 lamps are the highest efficiency lamps for 4 and 8-foot fixtures. Most applications will benefit from T8 technology versus T12 for several reasons. The T8 lamps have a higher efficacy (lumens per watt) rating and better color rendering than T12 lamps. Depending on the ballast used, the T8 lamp often delivers the same lumen output for 20% - 40% fewer watts.

2. The 4ft. F32T8 fluorescent lamps use up to 20% fewer watts than standard F40T12 lamps, saving approximately $12.80 in energy costs over the life of the lamp (8 cents per kWh). If used with an electronic ballast, an additional 7-10% efficiency can be obtained. The 8ft. F96T8 lamps use up to 33% fewer watts than standard F96T12 lamps on high efficiency electromagnetic ballasts. T8 lamps are available in various colors (CRI 75-90) with color temperatures from 3000K- 5000K.

3. The F32T8 lamp life is the same as standard F40T12 lamp on rapid start ballasts (20,000 hours). The F96T8 lamp has an average life of 15,000 hours and is 25% longer than the standard F96T12 lamp, which is rated at 12,000 hours.

4. T8 lamps are included on some energy reduction rebate programs offered by electric utilities because of their high-energy efficiency. Check with your local utility to inquire about possible cash rebates for upgrading your lighting.

5. Although an upgrade to T8s with electronic ballasts may have a higher initial cost, in the long run it will produce better light quality and significant energy savings over the T12 lamps. In many cases it has been estimated that the payback period for the upgrade may be four or five years.
