SAN FRANCISCO (NNS) -- As part of the 24th Annual Fleet Week welcoming events, the East Bay Law Enforcement Agencies and Oakland Navy League threw a pierside hometown barbeque at Pier 30-32 Oct. 10 for all active duty Sailors and sea cadets.

The barbeque celebrated the Navy’s visit to the bay area with a show of support for the men and women who serve in the armed forces. The event included a meal of burgers, hotdogs, salad and desert, as well as gifts for the Sailors and cadets, signed sports memorabilia from the Oakland A's, and cash as raffle prizes.

The Chairman of the pierside barbeque, and active member of the Oakland Navy League, Lou Lozano, also a retired Alameda County Sheriff, coordinated the sponsors.

"We are proud to show our support in any way we can," said Lozano.

Lozano was surprised by the overwhelming response of everyone involved, saying the feedback from the commanding officers of the ships has been positive, not only at the barbeque, but also from of the Bay Area residents.

“They have told me how their Sailors are coming back from last night's liberty, and telling stories of how people are hugging them, thrilled to see them here,” said Lozano.

Sailors not only enjoyed the barbeque lunch and the gifts, but also the warm reception from the city.

“This is my first Fleet Week ever, and when I went out last night, everybody was so nice," said Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class Fredrick Palmer of USS Tarawa (LHA 1). "They were shaking hands with me. I was meeting people from everywhere.”

Capt. Denny Dubard, commodore of Tarawa’s Amphibious Squadron 1, was eager to give his positive feedback on the Fleet Week event and the city.

“It’s a wonderful event for the Sailors. There are a lot of folks here donating their time. There’s even a judge over there flipping burgers.” Dubard said. “We really appreciate it, and we are pleased to be here.
