MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS December 9, 1997

The Department of Defense office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (SADBU) will host a discussion on race as it relates to economic opportunity and military readiness on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 at 1 p.m.(EST) in the Pentagon's conference center, Room 1E801/#7.

SADBU director Robert L. Neal Jr. has invited approximately 50 leaders within the small business community and key trade associations, senior White House and DoD officials to participate in the meeting. Neal said that the DoD conference is consistent with President Clinton's Initiative on Race which is hosting town meetings around the country to learn about local concerns.

In his letter of invitation, Neal stated that the purpose of the SADBU forum "is to promote a constructive dialogue to confront and work through challenging issues that surround race and its impact on military readiness. In addition, we will examine the economic impact of race and its effect on the acquisition of goods and services."

Media are invited to cover the SADBU discussion. The point of contact is Sarah Summerville, (703) 614-1151.
