About Icons Used on this Site


The following display of icons, along with explanatory text, identify document data formats commonly used on this website. This page is provided as a reference for understanding what type of documents are available for viewing and download.

Generally used within lists, this icon takes users to HTML (also referred to as 'webpage') version of document and information. These are viewable using the same browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera etc.) or other technology that you are using to read this information.

Acrobat is a program from Adobe that lets you capture a document and then view it in its original format and appearance. Acrobat is ideal for making documents or brochures that were designed for the print medium viewable electronically and capable of being shared with others on the Internet. To view an Acrobat document, which is called a Portable Document Format (PDF) file, you need Acrobat Reader. The Reader is free and can be downloaded from Adobe.

This icon represents links to PDF (Portable Document Format) documents. These documents are printer friendly, but takes more time to load than webpages. If you need help for Acrobat Reader, please go to our Acrobat Help page.


PDF Fillable documents are PDF files that can be filled out online, and printed. Unless you have the full Acrobat program from Adobe, you cannot save the information you filled into the form/document.

This is the icon for Word Documents. These documents are readable using Microsoft's Word software, or other word processing software.

This is the icon for Text files, which can be readable in Wordpad or Notepad. The format is just plain text; no tables, charts or images.

This icon is used for WordPerfect files. These are not very common, but older files still require WordPerfect.

Excel is a spreadsheet program from Microsoft, a component of its Office product group for business applications. Excel is an automated version of the paper-based spreadsheet that makes it easier to manipulate, process, and view the data.
This icon represents links to Excel documents such as graphs, charts, and other documents. In order to view these files, you will need to have Microsoft's Excell software program installed on your computer.

Presentation software (sometimes called "presentation graphics") is a category of application program used to create sequences of words and pictures that tell a story or help support a speech or public presentation of information.

This icon represents a link to a PowerPoint documents. In order to view these files, you will need to have Microsoft's PowerPoint software program installed in your computer.


This icon represents a link to a Access Database documents. In order to view these files, you will need to have Microsoft's Access software program installed in your computer.


Flash files are animated movies, or banners. This is a popular authoring software is used to create vector graphics-based animation programs with full-screen navigation interfaces, graphic illustrations, and simple interactivity in a resizable file format that is small enough to stream across a normal modem connection. The software is frequently used on the Web, both because of its speed (vector-based animations, which can adapt to different display sizes and resolutions, play as they download) and for the smooth way it renders graphics. Flash files are designed for optimized delivery to the user. Following links annotated with this icon will present the user with a multimedia experience. NOTE: Some organizations and/or firewalls restrict or prohibit the opening of this type of file.

Zip files are compressed data used for distributing and storing files. Zip files can contain one or more files. Zip files make it easy to group files and makes it easier to transfer these files across the internet. NOTE: Some organizations and/or firewalls restrict or prohibit the opening of this type of file.

This icon takes you to the Zip Help page where you'll find information on what Zip files are and how to use them.

Occasionally you will encounter Executable files on this site. They are small applications that when "opened" - that is, selected by putting your mouse over the file name and then initiated by double-clicking your mouse, for example - causes the operating system to run the program. NOTE: Some organizations and/or firewalls restrict or prohibit the opening of this type of file.
Print versions of documents can be generated by selecting links annotated with this icon.
This Closed Caption symbol advises users that a video is captioned
This unique Closed Caption symbol advises users that this video is captioned by the National Caption Institute.
The Open Caption icon indicates that the video displays the captioning on screen.
Our Transcript icon is frequently used in links to Speeches, Videos, etc., that provide a written transcript of the multimedia content.
This Camera image indicates a link to photos and/or photo galleries.
Our Feedback icon is provided to advise you that you may submit comment, questions or other information to us in regard to specific content
This icon notifies you that the link you're entering is an interactive Calculator that requires user selection and/or input.
