Crime Victimization Survey (CVS) Software, Version 1.3BJS and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) developed a software program for localities to conduct their own telephone surveys of residents to collect data on crime victimization, attitudes toward policing, and other community-related issues. This survey can produce information similar to that published in Criminal Victimization and Perceptions of Community Safety in 12 Cities, 1998. To learn more about the software, see:
To run this software, your PC must have at least a 486 processor, 16 MB RAM, a VGA video adapter, Windows95/98/NT 4.0, and 50 MB free disk space. The software is available online for free. The online file is 12 MB and will take about 1.5 hours to download using a 33.3 K connection. In addition to the software, the online file includes the CVS Software User's Manual and Conducting Community Surveys: A Practical Guide for Law Enforcement Agencies, a brief overview of the issues related to conducting local surveys. Hard copies of these documents are available from the BJS Clearinghouse at 800-851-3420. To download the software, you will need a user ID and password. Contact the BJS Clearinghouse by email (askcvs@ncjrs.org) or telephone (1-800-851-3420) to obtain the user ID and password.
