Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz yesterday presented the 2001 Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards, including the prestigious Phoenix Trophy, during a ceremony held in the Pentagon. The awards recognize annually the most significant weapon system and equipment maintenance achievements within the Department of Defense.

All four military Services were represented this year in the competition categories of small, medium, and large units. This is the 17th year of the maintenance awards program that was established to encourage maintenance excellence, recognize outstanding achievements in maintenance management, and demonstrate the essential role of maintenance in the readiness and sustainability of U.S. forces. In addition, the coveted Phoenix Trophy is presented to the best of the best of each year's winners from all categories. The awards are sponsored in conjunction with the National Defense Industrial Association.

The recipients of this year's Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards are:

• Army: 58th Signal Co., Mannheim, Germany
• Navy: Fighter Squadron VF-103, Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

• Marine Corps: Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 36, Okinawa, Japan
• Air Force: 62d/446th Aircraft Generation Squadrons, McChord Air Force Base, Wash.

• Navy: Nuclear Aircraft Carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Phoenix Award winner
• Air Force: 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.
