Today in the Department of Defense, July 14 - 16, 2001

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz are in Washington this weekend. There are no media or public events on their schedules.

As part of the Defense Department's ongoing robust research and development effort for missile defense, the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization will conduct a flight test to include the planned intercept of a long-range ballistic missile target on Saturday, July 14. The flight test launch window is scheduled for 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. EDT. See the news release for details.

The Executive Committee of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services will visit military commands and meet with service members in Alaska, Korea, Japan, Okinawa and Hawaii from July 14 through July 29. See the news release for details.

The next regular Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted Tuesday, July 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the DoD briefing room, Pentagon 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

U.S. soldiers and airmen from Germany and Italy are participating in the training exercise Rapid Guardian II in Kosovo through July 20. See the European Command web page for details.
