Science Education and Career Experience

ARS reaches out through it's Student and Volunteer Programs to provide minority students with knowledge and experience that is valuable in understanding science and making career decisions. ARS-wide employment and training programs include: USDA/1890 National Scholars Program and Summer Internship Program for undergraduate students, and Research Apprentice Program for high school students. For further information contact the Civil Rights Staff or the Area Civil Rights Managers.  Students may also gain knowledge and experience through volunteering.

ARS employees and locations also reach out individually to potential scientists, through volunteer activities such as Science and Career Fairs, Adopt-A-School, Sci4Kids, and mentoring.

ARS helps high-school teachers keep abreast of the cutting edge of science through summer research in it's Teacher Fellowship Program.

ARS supports efforts of minority science and education organizations. The Agency provided financial support to the 1998 and 1999 National Conferences of the Society of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciencies (MANRRS). MANRRS is a college based organization that promotes the agricultural sciences and related fields among under represented groups. In addition, one of the building blocks of USDA's relationship with HACU is the E. Kika De La Garza Internship Program.
