Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grants, Phase II

NLM participates in the NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) grant programs in areas that coincide with its mission. Projects relating to patient safety, bioinformatics, or disaster management are especially welcome.

The overall purpose of the SBIR/STTR Program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting Federal research or research and development (R/R&D) needs, increase the commercial application of NIH, CDC and FDA supported research results, foster and encourage participation by socially and economically disadvantaged small business concerns and women-owned business concerns in the SBIR/STTR Program, and improve the return on investment from Federally-funded research for economic and social benefits to the Nation.

Funds are made available to support 2 phases of SBIR/STTR research and development. The objective of SBIR/STTR Phase II grant is is to continue the research or R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results of Phase I, scientific and technical merit, and commercial potential of the Phase II application. Applicants must obtain approval from NLM before submitting a Phase II application. The NIH Fast-Track mechanism expedites the decision and award of SBIR and STTR Phase II funding for scientifically meritorious applications that have a high potential for commercialization. Fast-Track incorporates a submission and review process in which both Phase I and Phase II grant applications are submitted and reviewed together. At this time, NLM does not accept Fast-Track applications without prior approval.
