Secretary Thompson Kicks off Better Benefits Tour with America's Top Doctors

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson will hold a news conference Monday to send the nation's doctors on a cross-country "Better Benefits Tour" to promote the need for strengthening Medicare with modern medicine delivered in a modern way.

America's four doctors -- Dr. Richard Carmona, Surgeon General; Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Dr. Mark McClellan, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration; and Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Director of the National Institutes of Health -- will make an unprecedented trip together to discuss the need for stronger health care for seniors as the President wants to provide.

The tour will kick off in Washington, D.C., then make its way to Miami, Chicago, Denver and San Diego over three days. The tour takes place during a week when both the House and Senate consider Medicare legislation.

Secretary Thompson and Members of Congress Come Together on Harleys and Medicare Reform

Secretary Thompson led a Harley Ride to a health clinic in Maryland for senior Harley riders June 16 to highlight the need for Medicare reform. Senators Max Baucus (D, MT) participated in the fifty-mile ride, while Jim Bunning (R, KY), and Craig Thomas (R, WY) showed their support for the bill by helping to kick off the event across from Capitol Hill.

The Harley Ride took place to raise awareness about the greater need for Medicare reform this year, so seniors can stay healthy, active, and continue to participate in their favorite activities, such as riding their Harley's. The event took place the same day the Senate began working on the bill that had passed the Senate Finance committee on June 13.

Personal Health

Here is some information to help disparage the myth that fast foods are always an unhealthy choice and you should not eat them when dieting.

Fact: Fast foods can be part of a healthy weight-loss program with a little bit of know- how. Choose salads and grilled foods instead of fried foods, which are high in fat and calories. Use high-fat, high-calorie toppings, like full-fat mayonnaise and salad dressings only in small amounts.

Eating fried fast food (like french fries) or other high-fat foods like chocolate once in a while as a special treat is fine--but try to split an order with a friend or order a small portion. In small amounts, these foods can still be part of a healthy eating plan.

This information is provided by the National Institutes of Health.
