The Exhibition Program provides valuable learning and teaching resources for teachers and students of diverse paths. The interdisciplinary topics interwoven in each exhibition—history, science, medicine, technology, and art—promote self-directed and experiential learning and teaching opportunities online and onsite as described below:

For Teachers and Students

  • Onsite Visits

Guided Tours can be arranged for a variety of groups such as teachers, students, educational institutions, community organizations, and associations. The tours last approximately 30 minutes to an hour and provide an interpretive framework for further exploration of the exhibition.

Educational Programs are put together for groups who are able to spend more than one hour visiting the National Library of Medicine. In addition to the guided tour of the exhibition, the Exhibition Program works with other areas of the Library to provide tailor-made educational programs that include the presentations on:

    • bird's eye view of the National Library of Medicine
    • bioinformatics resources
    • careers in science and medicine paper conservation
    • treasures in the History of Medicine Division
    • Visible Human Project

The presentations are selected based on the group’s interest, availability of presenters, and the duration of the visit.

The web sites created by the Exhibition Program also offer a variety of learning experiences. There are opportunities for learning more about the topics presented, as well as resources for students and teachers.

Our latest exhibition, Changing the Face of Medicine, offers a Resources section which has information for those planning a career in medicine, as well as lesson plans for teachers, and suggested reading for those wanting to know more about the history of women physicians.

The Activities section offers online learning about how the human body works and find out how exceptional physicians have helped to improve our quality of life.
