Traveling Exhibitions

  • Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature

This traveling exhibition is based upon a major exhibition produced by the National Library of Medicine in 1997-1998. The exhibition encourages audiences to examine the intent of Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, and to discuss Shelley's and their own views about personal and societal responsibility as it relates to science and other areas of life.

Frankenstein will visit 80 libraries across the country between October 2002 and December 2005. In addition to the exhibition, participating libraries will host interpretive and educational programs that help audiences examine Mary Shelley's novel and how it uses scientific experimentation as metaphor to comment on cultural values, especially the importance of exercising responsibility toward individuals and the community in all areas of human activity, including science.

Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature was developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. It was made possible by major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Washington, D.C., and the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, M.D.

  • Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians

The National Library of Medicine in conjunction with the American Library Association is developing a traveling exhibition about the history of women physicians called Changing the Face of Medicine. The traveling exhibition will be an adaptation of the 4,000 sq ft exhibition currently on display in the National Library of Medicine. The traveling show is expected to launch in May 2005, and will travel to 40 libraries across America.

All libraries are eligible to submit a proposal to host the traveling exhibition. The American Library Association will release a request for proposals in April 2004. Information about the proposal will be released via various list serves including member ALA libraries, member Medical Library Association institutions, and libraries who are a member of the American Association of Medical Colleges. The ALA will also post information on their Public Programs Office Web site.

The selection criteria will be based on a combination of factors including special programs developed to support the themes of the exhibition and to bring together different area organizations groups, library location, and potential impact in the community.

The exhibition will require approximately 1000 sq ft to set up and access to power to run computers accompanying the display. A special feature of the traveling exhibition will be an interactive multimedia component: Two computer kiosks will showcase the multimedia features of the original exhibition, including educational activities, a portrait gallery, and other audiovisuals.

The show will travel free of charge, will come with a site notebook, which provides information about the exhibition, reading lists, press releases, etc, brochures, posters, and other supporting materials.
