Real Property Alternative Officing Information Clearinghouse

GSA is pleased to provide this webpage focusing on Alternative Officing (AO), one of the key strategies for developing high performance/high quality workplaces. The goal is to provide the information, tools, and other incentives to jumpstart AO initiatives in federal agencies and other organizations interested in improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of their workplaces.

AO, also known as alternative workplace arrangements, includes workplace programs and associated facility reconfigurations such as telework, hoteling, desk sharing, satellite offices/telecenters, touchdown stations, free address facilities, virtual offices, etc. AO initiatives typically result in workplace improvements in areas such as:

  • Facility performance and space utilization efficiency/effectiveness;
  • Allocation/utilization/flexibility of space to meet diverse/changing organizational needs;
  • Workspace quality factors, quality of worklife;
  • Individual/organizational performance; and
  • Technology utilization and return on investment.

For more information, see the AO Library which includes AO Case Studies, Tools, and Relevant Laws and Research.

Request for Assistance

GSA is seeking additional AO information for this website from any organization, public or private sector, that has an AO arrangement (as defined above) underway, being implemented, being planned, or just being seriously considered. This contribution will assist in enabling federal agencies and other organizations to update and improve workplace management as well as provide beneficial visibility to the contributing organization.

Coming Soon

GSA will be setting up an AO pilot to develop recommended practices as well as to provide increased visibility to AO solutions. At that time, GSA will be seeking organizations to participate in the pilot.   Stay tuned!
