Working with Other Governments Partnership for Intergovernmental Innovations (PI2)

This intergovernmental innovation group of federal, state, and county government officials works solely on issues that cross jurisdictional lines.

PI2 was formed in December 1999 to provide intergovernmental innovators a resource to overcome barriers in process, policy, and regulation. PI2 provides a platform for discussion and collective action in the intergovernmental arena. The need for PI2 to continue this work will grow exponentially over the next decade as governments move increasingly toward integrated service delivery.

PI2 works on intergovernmental projects at the request of federal, state, or local government officials. These projects are very complex because of the multiple government levels involved. Using an extensive network of contacts, PI2 members identify people that can help remove barriers and allow projects that have reached an impasse to move forward. Once the right people are identified and the project is moving forward, PI2 relinquishes its role and moves to another issue or project.

PI2 is helping to lay the groundwork for the electronic government of the future, which will build on information and communication technologies. The goal is to allow the management of governments horizontally and vertically across jurisdictional lines. This is the challenge for public administrators in the next decade.
