The Forest Service is proposing to amend seven Land and Resource Management Plans in the Southern Rockies to adopt conservation measures for Canada lynx, a threatened species. The proposed amendment affects the following National Forests:

Colorado:

  • San Juan National Forest
  • Pike and San Isabel National Forest
  • Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest
  • Routt National Forest
  • Rio Grande National Forest
  • Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests

Wyoming

  • Medicine Bow National Forest

During the spring of 2000, we laid out the changes we propose to make for lynx conservation in the Federal Register and in news stories. After taking comments on the lynx amendment proposal, we are now examining, through an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process, the biological, social, and economic effects of the proposed action and various alternatives. Most measures require little change in the way federal lands are currently managed. The proposed action and alternatives currently being developed amend Land and Resource Management Plans to include direction as specified in the Lynx Conservation Assessment and Strategy to conserve lynx and lynx habitat. Issues being addressed through the Southern Rockies Amendment include:

  • Lynx productivity, mortality and movements;
  • Public safety and property protection; and
  • Human uses.

Our analysis should be available in 2004 and the draft EIS document will include a 90-day public review period. After that, we will decide what measures to put in place for lynx conservation.
