Rocky Mountain Region

The cultural and natural heritage assets of the Rocky Mountain Region include some of the crown jewels of the entire National Forest System. This Region has many of the earliest, largest, best known, most exotic, and most interesting historic, prehistoric, and paleontological resources in the nation. Among them are the Chimney Rock on the San Juan National Forest, the Hudson-Meng Paleoindian Bison Kill Site on the Nebraska National Forest, the dinosaur quarries and Historic Alpine Tunnel on the Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnnison National Forests, the Mummy Cave on the Shoshone National Forest, the extensive dinosaur trackway in Picketwire Canyon, and tie hack communities, narrow gauge railroad grades and tunnels, rock art, homesteads, and historic roads and trails throughout the Region.

Some historic cabins, lodges, and fire look-outs areavailable for overnight stays. Scenic byways and Heritage hiking tours offer access to many interesting sites. Most Forests offer summer opportunities for visitors to participate in archeological excavation, survey or rehabilitation of historic structures.
