The Academic Institutional Profiles are produced annually by the National Science Foundation's Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) for those universities and colleges reporting non-zero data for the past three fiscal years in at least one of the following surveys:

The Profiles are updated as each survey's data are finalized and released. Responses to the NSF academic surveys generate trend data which are displayed in statistical tables within each Profile.

Individual Profiles can be selected using either an alphabetic listing of institution names or a search engine that lets you specify an institution's name, part of a name (e.g. "Texas or "Mass*"), or an institution's FICE code. The Academic Institutional Profiles have been designed for viewing and printing using Netscape's Navigator 2.0 or with a similar browser. For best viewing on a standard (640x480 pixel) monitor, we recommend that you set the preformatted font in your browser to Courier 9.

Each institution's profile includes its ranking (among all institutions with non-zero data) on one aggregate measure for each of the three surveys. Double clicking on the institution's rank on any of these measures will pull up the underlying table on which the rank is based

Data Sources

The institutional profiles are based on information collected through three annual NSF surveys:

The Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges collects data annually on scientific and engineering research and development expenditures at the nation's universities and colleges. Available data include data on R&D expenditures by source of funds and by science and engineering discipline and data on expenditures for research equipment. More detailed information including national summaries and institutional rankings is available in the academic R&D expenditures publication series or can be obtained from Ms. Marge Machen at (703) 292-7786 or via e-mail at mmachen@nsf.gov.

The Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions collects data annually from 18 Federal agencies that obligate virtually all Federal R&D support to academic institutions. Available data include data on all categories of science and engineering obligations by agency. More detailed information including national summaries and institutional rankings is available in the Federal support publication series or can be obtained from Mr. Richard Bennof at (703) 292-7783 or via e-mail at rbennof@nsf.gov.

The Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering collects data annually on degree-seeking graduate students enrolled at the nation's universities and colleges. Available data include data on both full-time and part-time graduate students by science and engineering discipline, gender, and race/ethnicity, as well as data on postdoctorates by science and engineering discipline and gender. Data are also available on full-time graduate students by primary source and mechanism of support. More detailed information including national summaries and institutional rankings is available in the graduate student publication series or can be obtained from Dr. Joan S. Burrelli at (703) 292-7793 or via e-mail at jburrell@nsf.gov.

Data Notes

An alphabetic suffix may be associated with certain individual data variables. An e suffix (as in 32e) indicates that the data were estimated by NSF or by the respondent. An i suffix (as in 78i) indicates that the data were computer-imputed on the basis of previous years' data and data from similar institutions. Dashes (--) indicate that the data were not collected in that survey year.

The abbreviation n.e.c. used with fields of science and engineering stands for "not elsewhere classified" and is frequently used for interdisciplinary programs.

The "Life sciences" shown in the academic R&D expenditures survey data are comparable to the sum of "Agricultural sciences," "Biological sciences," and "Health fields" shown in the graduate student survey data.

Data in the academic R&D expenditures survey differ from those in the Federal support survey, referenced by "obligations." Expenditures are funds actually spent by the institution during its fiscal year, while obligations are funds designated for the reporting institution during the Federal fiscal year, regardless of when the recipient institution may actually spend these funds.
