For Citizens Blue Pages Program

The GSA Federal Technology Service manages the Blue Pages Program, a nation-wide effort to modernize the public's access to telephone directory information regarding government services. GSA's Blue Pages Team partners with 42 agencies and 25 telephone directory publishers to produce a standardized set of listings that are accurate, service oriented, and informative.

Program accomplishments by the end of 2004 include over 700 revised telephone directories delivered to an estimated 85 million households—rural and urban—located in 46 states and the District of Columbia. The new Blue Pages directories include toll-free numbers and Internet addresses displayed in an easy-to-read and colorful format.

For those with Internet access, the Blue Pages Program has a user-friendly, information-rich, public website. This Bobby-compliant website responds to special-needs users with TTD/TTY numbers where available. The site includes a helpdesk that citizens may e-mail at questions@usbluepages.gov to get help finding federal listings.

The Blue Pages provide free publicity for other federal agencies by providing free banner information spots on the U.S. Blue Pages website. The site also educates citizens about the good news in federal government through special website features.

Future program goals include re-competing the contract support in fiscal year 2005 to include these capabilities:

  • A web-based management system;
  • An interactive speech recognition system; and
  • An automated listing validation.

Other goals are to expand the U.S. Blue Pages’ reach so that 97 percent of U.S. households have access to federal listings in their local telephone books, to launch a more in-depth search capability on the U.S. Blue Pages public website, and to find new ways to save taxpayer dollars by reducing or eliminating federal listing costs.
