Interpretive Summary: Until recently, there have been few herbicides that provide effective residual control of troublesome broadleaf weeds and perennial sedges in peanut. A comprehensive review was conducted of newly registered residual herbicides and to define their role for growers in future weed control systems. Data was compiled from over 100 trials conducted from 1990 to 2000 by the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Auburn University, and USDA-ARS. Treatments included Cadre, Strongarm, Valor, and Spartan. A standard treatment of paraquat plus Basagran was applied alone and in combination with the residual treatments. Sicklepod control with Cadre was 86%, 73% with paraquat plus Basagran, and <69% with other treatments. Florida beggarweed control was 90% with Valor, 78% with Strongarm, 72% with Cadre, 76% with Spartan, and 70% with paraquat plus Basagran. Purple nutsedge control was 93% with Cadre, 70% with Spartan, and <69% with other herbicides applied alone. Yellow nutsedge control was 93% with Cadre, 98% with Spartan, 83% with Strongarm, and <69% with Valor and paraquat plus Basagran. Control of other species varied by treatment when herbicides were applied alone. When residual herbicides were applied with paraquat plus Basagran, weed control generally improved. Only Cadre controlled sicklepod >90%, only Valor controlled Florida beggarweed >90%, only Cadre controlled purple nutsedge >90%, only Spartan controlled yellow nutsedge >90%, only Strongarm averaged 90% bristly starbur control, and all herbicides provided good to excellent morningglory control. These data will be used to help advise peanut growers on more cost-effective ways to manage weeds using the new residual herbicides.
