Title: Sampling Arthropods

Author

Submitted to: Encyclopedia Of Entomology
Publication Acceptance Date: December 15, 2003
Publication Date: August 1, 2004
Citation: Naranjo, S.E. 2004. Sampling Arthropods. Encyclopedia Of Entomology. Kluwer Academic Press.

Interpretive Summary: Sampling is a fundamental process in most areas of experimentally-based research and is crucial for describing, measuring and quantifying arthropod population dynamics. This review attempts to provide a broadly-based, non-mathematical overview of sampling, including delineation of the goals of sampling, examination of the basic tools for gathering data, details of the basic components and mechanics of developing a useful sampling plan, and discussion of the testing and evaluation of the final sampling program. The review is aimed at the general entomological audience, but may also be useful to those more specifically interested in developing and implementing sampling programs for arthropods of interest. The review includes an extensive glossary of commonly-used sampling terms and key references to more detailed treatments of arthropod sampling.
