Technical Abstract: This presentation gives an overview of some of the many outstanding contributions by Professor. Peter Wierenga to soil physics research, and more generally to the soil, hydrologic and environmental sciences. His work has covered an impressive array of topics, including heat movement, unsaturated flow, solute transport, soil-plant-water relationships, and subsurface heterogeneity. His experimental studies involved scales ranging from detailed laboratory column experiments, to lysimeters studies, to large-scale field studies, including the now famous Las Cruces Trench Study. He was also key in developing many analytical and numerical models for water, heat and/or solute movement. Peter Wierenga additionally is known for his commitment to excellence in student education, his help to a wide range of users in the soil and hydrological communities, and his public service. His influence and leadership in soil physics and related fields has been felt worldwide.
