Technical Abstract: The naturally charged cationic and anionic biopolymers were characterized and blended together to obtain polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC's). These gel-like complexes were found to be effective in removing the heavy metals and other solid contaminants from the waste water. The PEC's were further characterized and optimized for maximum efficiency. This work has implications in reducing the heavy metals and other contaminants from industrial waste water streams utilizing renewable polymers.
