Interpretive Summary: There is a desire to have a flax fiber industry in the US to supply a consistent quality product for various industries. Information is needed on the effort of USDA to provide research for a fiber industry. A history of this effort was provided as an invited addition after the meeting was held. Information provides a background for USDA's support to develop a flax fiber industry in the US.
Technical Abstract: An account is provided on recent events towards the development of a domestic flax fiber industry, with emphasis on research by ARS-USDA and collaborators in the effort. The information comes from published resources, discussions, and personal references. Additional data and insights are undoubtedly available, and no claim is made that the story covers all details. The information presented, however, provides a general overview of developments and related research from the inception of an ARS-USDA flax fiber project, for which I serve as lead scientist.
