PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNS FOOD ALLERGEN BILL

The Food Allergen Bill (S.741) was signed into law by President George W. Bush on the evening of August 2, 2004. It will become effective on January 1, 2006.

This bill requires the food industry to use the commonly accepted names of the eight most common allergens - milk, eggs, fish, crustacea, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and soybeans - when labeling products. These items account for 90 percent of all food allergies. An estimated 250 people die each year from food-related allergic reactions and another 30,000 require emergency room treatment.

Please thank your senators and representatives for supporting this bill.
