Competitive grants and cooperative agreements program
awards
The Competitive Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program of the Food
Assistance and Nutrition Research Program (FANRP) funds research to support
USDA's domestic food assistance programs, including the Food Stamp Program,
the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC), and child nutrition programs. FANRP uses its Competitive Grants
and Cooperative Agreements Program to stimulate new and innovative research
and undertake projects conducted jointly with ERS researchers. The program
is publicly announced in the spring of each year and awards are made through
the use of peer review panels.
In each table of awards, research projects are grouped by topic area:
FANRP's perennial research themes are diet and nutritional outcomes,
food-assistance-program targeting and delivery, and program dynamics and administration.
Within these broad themes, FANRP identifies annual research priorities.
In developing research priorities, FANRP works closely with USDA's Food
and Nutrition Service (FNS), the agency responsible for administering
the Department's food assistance and nutrition programs. FANRP also seeks
input from a broad constituency of policy officials, researchers, practitioners,
advocates, industry groups, and service providers. In conjunction with
these activities, FANRP sponsors an annual round-table discussion to identify
crucial research and information needs that would support food assistance
and nutrition programs and to ensure the policy- and program-relevance
of the annual research agenda.
