Healthy Aging Initiative

Demonstration Projects


CMS, in collaboration with the Public Health Service, Centers for Disaese Control and Prevention, Quality Improvement Organizations, federal agencies in the Department of Health and Human Services, and other public and private sector organizations is conducting a number of demonstrations. These demonstrations are designed to identify comprehensive and systematic approaches to health promotion, which address both clinical prevention and behavioral risk factor reduction.

Following are demonstrations currently underway:

Standing Orders Project--To improve flu and pneumococcal immunization rates in long-term care facilities through standing orders.

Medicare Stop Smoking Program--To test the feasibility of implementing a smoking cessation benefit in Medicare.

Senior Risk Reduction Program--To determine whether a comprehensive and systematic approach to risk factor identification and reduction using tailored interventions is feasible in Medicare.
