F. Joseph Moravec was appointed commissioner of the Public Buildings Service of GSA on June 4, 2001. As head of the Public Buildings Service, Moravec is in charge of asset management and design, construction, leasing, operations, security, and disposal for a real estate portfolio of more than 330 million square feet in more than 8,000 public and private buildings accommodating over one million federal workers. PBS owns or leases nearly all civilian federal office space, courthouses, border stations, and many laboratories and storage facilities. The PBS annual budget is approximately $6.5 billion, more than 90 percent of which is contracted out to the private sector.

Commissioner Moravec has over twenty-five years of experience in the commercial real estate industry as practitioner and manager. He has served as president or partner of a number of firms including Leggat McCall & Werner, Grubb & Ellis, Barnes, Morris, Pardoe & Foster and Faison. Prior to coming to GSA, he was the senior advisor for business development at The George Washington University.

Joe Moravec has been active, often in a leadership role, in numerous professional and civic organizations including the Washington DC Board of Realtors, DC Building Industry Association, Metropolitan Washington Association of Real Estate Professionals, Jubilee Housing, Norwood School, and St. Francis Episcopal Church.

A native of the New York City area, he is a graduate of Harvard University.
