Key Staff Dennis R. Smith - Regional Administrator, New England Region

Dennis R. Smith was sworn in as the General Services Administration's New England Regional Administrator on September 24, 2001.

Prior to being appointed, Smith served Massachusetts Governors Weld, Cellucci, and Swift as Superintendent of the Bureau of State Buildings for eight years. From 1989 to 1993, in the administration of President George H. W. Bush, he was director of the New England office for the U.S. Department of Education, serving as Regional Representative for Education Secretary Lamar Alexander. In the 1980s, Smith was elected to the Planning Board in the town of Middleboro and then served two terms as a Selectman. He was also a mathematics teacher in Middleboro. President Jimmy Carter appointed him as a member of the United States Metric Board in 1978 and re-appointed him in 1980.

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell and a master’s degree from Suffolk University in Boston.

Dennis Smith lives in Plymouth with his wife, June. He is the father of three adult children.
