NRC TO MEET WITH AMEREN TO DISCUSS INSPECTION RESULTS

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet on Wednesday, February 27, with officials of AmerenUE, operator of the Callaway nuclear power plant near Fulton, Mo., to discuss the results of a recent fact-finding inspection.

The meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Callaway Emergency Operations Facility, one mile south of the junction of highway CC and highway O, in Fulton. The meeting is open for public observation, and NRC officials will be available afterward to answer questions.

On January 31 the NRC sent a four-person, fact-finding inspection team, called an augmented inspection team, to Callaway to look into circumstances surrounding the malfunction of an auxiliary feedwater pump. Ameren workers found pieces of debris from a degraded seal in the condensate storage tank, which could have affected all three of the plant's auxiliary feedwater pumps. Auxiliary feedwater pumps, which are required by NRC regulations to be available for operation while the plant is operating, are important components of the plant's safety system.

A written report of the team's findings will be issued within 30 days of this meeting.
