NRC ANNOUNCES OPPORTUNITY FOR HEARING
FOR LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR ST. LUCIE UNITS 1 AND 2

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the opportunity to request a hearing on an application for renewal of the operating licenses for the St. Lucie nuclear power plant, Units 1 and 2. Florida Power & Light Co., which operates the facility, submitted the application last November.

The deadline for hearing requests is February 28, 30 days after publication of today's Federal Register notice. By that date, petitions must be filed by anyone whose interest might be affected by the license renewals and who wishes to participate as a party to the proceeding.

The plant is located 12 miles southeast of Ft. Pierce, Florida. The current operating licenses expire on March 1, 2016 for Unit 1; and on April 6, 2023 for Unit 2.

Florida Power & Light Co. submitted applications for 20-year extensions to the operating licenses for both reactors. A notice of receipt was published by NRC in the Federal Register on December 27, and availability of the application was announced in a press release on December 31.

The staff has determined that Florida Power & Light Co. has submitted sufficient information for the NRC to formally "docket," or file, the applications. The docketing of the application does not preclude requesting additional information as the review proceeds, nor does it predict whether the Commission with grant or deny the application.

Petitions for a hearing must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, Attention: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff. They may also be delivered to the NRC Public Document Room, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. Copies of the petition also should be sent to the Office of the General Counsel, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, and to Mr. J. A. Stall, Senior Vice-President, Nuclear and Chief Nuclear Officer, Florida Power & Light Company, 700 Universe Boulevard, Post Office Box 029100, Juno Beach, FL 33408-0420. Additional information about the opportunity for hearing may be found in the Federal Register notice.

Copies of the application are available on the NRC web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html through the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). Help in using ADAMS is available by contacting the NRC Public Document Room staff at 301/415-4737 or 1/800/397-4209, or by sending a message to pdr@nrc.gov via e-mail. The application is available for public inspection at the NRC's Public Document Room.

In addition, a copy of the license renewal application for the St. Lucie plant is available at the Indian River Community College library located at Ft. Pierce, Florida.
