NRC FINDS
NO SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT |
|||||||||
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal of the operating license of the Turkey Point nuclear plant, Units 3 and 4, in Homestead, Florida. In the report, the NRC staff found that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for Turkey Point Units 3 and 4 are not so great that preserving the option of license renewal for energy planning decision makers would be unreasonable. The current operating licenses for Turkey Point, Units 3 and 4 (Units 1 and 2 are coal-fired units) will expire on July 19, 2012, and April 10, 2013, respectively. Florida Power & Light Company submitted its application for license renewal in September 2000. As part of its environmental review of the application, NRC held three public meetings near the plant -- one on December 6, 2000, and two on July 17, 2001 -- regarding the scope of the review and a draft version of the environmental impact statement. Comments were received from members of the public, local officials and representatives of other agencies. The final report is available electronically on the NRC web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html through the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). Help in using ADAMS is available by contacting the NRC Public Document Room staff at 301/415-4737 or 1/800/397-4209, or by sending a message to pdr@nrc.gov via e-mail. A copy of the report also is available for public inspection at the NRC's Public Document Room, located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. |
