The Nuclear Regulatory Commission
will hold three public meetings in Nevada next month to discuss safety and
regulatory issues regarding a potential application from the Department of
Energy to build and operate a high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca
Mountain, Nevada.
Each meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. Dates and locations
are: April 8 at the Beatty Senior Center, 150 A Avenue South, Beatty; Tuesday,
April 9, at the Tonopah Convention Center, 301 West Brougher Avenue, Tonopah;
and Wednesday, April 10, at the Holiday Inn Prospector Inn & Casino, 1501
E. Aultman Street, Ely.
The meetings will begin with an overview of NRC's responsibilities, continue
with a presentation on the NRC's regulations and preparations for evaluating
a potential DOE license application, and conclude with a discussion on the
NRC role with respect to the transportation of high-level waste. An opportunity
for questions will be provided. In addition, members of the NRC staff will
be available for informal discussions with members of the public.
