Vision
Safe and reproducible research: healthy animals, healthy people.
Mission
Provide a forum to stimulate an exchange of ideas and information that promotes the identification of hazards, assessment of risks, and implementation of measures to ensure the health and safety of personnel and animals. This 4th National Symposium on Biosafety, Working Safely with Research Animals, represents the next step in the natural progress of information exchange, evolving from discussions within the Interagency Research Animal Committee (IRAC) to the development of an Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR) Report on Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and USE of Research Animals, and now to this Symposium.

Preface
The 4th National Symposium on Biosafety: Working Safely with Research Animals was held in Atlanta during January 1996, with over 500 persons attending. This Proceedings, a compilation of the various addresses, presentations, and discussions offered during the Symposium, represent state-of-the-art thinking on a wide variety of issues related to the health and safety of people and the animals with which they are entrusted.
It is not coincidental that this meeting took place at this time. The Sponsors of this Symposium recognized the interdependence of governmental agencies, professional societies, academia, commercial interests, and the people dedicated to working with research animals.
I encourage you to complete your library of related publications with copies of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (ILAR), Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (CDC/NIH), and the soon-to-be-published Occupational Health and Safety and the Care and Use of Research Animals (ILAR).
This Symposium was sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Health and Safety; Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR); National Institutes of Health, Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR); American Biological Safety Association (ABSA); Emory University School of Medicine; Yerkes Primate Center; University of Georgia (UGA). Associate sponsors were: Morehouse School of Medicine; Merck and Company, Inc.; U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service; Lab Animal, a Nature Publication; American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC); American Society for Laboratory Animal Practitioners (ASLAP); American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM); American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS); and Association of Primate Veterinarians (APV).
