Detail and Transfer of Federal Employees to International Organizations

An agency may detail or transfer an employee to any organization which the Office of Personnel Management has designated as an international organization (see list of international organizations). A detail or transfer may not exceed 5 years but may be extended 3 additional years upon the approval of the head of the agency. A transferred employee is entitled to be reemployed in his or her former position or one of like status and pay within 30 days of his or her application for reemployment.
