Medicare
Providing the best available health care for New Mexico's seniors has long been one of my top priorities and December 8, 2003, marked a historic occasion-President Bush signed into law the "Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act of 2003." This new law, which I supported, fulfills a promise made to America's seniors. It provides seniors with prescription drug coverage for the first time since the Medicare program's creation in 1965, and it contains reforms that will strengthen and modernize the Medicare system. By strengthening and modernizing the Medicare system, we are ensuring that America's seniors will continue to have access to high quality, comprehensive health care in the future.
Medicare beneficiaries have waited too long for prescription drug coverage. Experts and fair minded people have known for many years that the Medicare program must be reformed, and now, beginning in 2006, all 250,000 Medicare beneficiaries living in New Mexico will be eligible to get prescription drug coverage through a Medicare-approved plan.
