Family Assistance Centers are now available - Family Assistance Centers have been established to support the families of our mobilized soldiers, as well as the families of any deployed DOD service member in the regional area. Our goal is to provide “one-stop centers” that will provide immediate assistance to families. Click here for more information.

scientistOn a per capita basis, no state has provided more citizen soldiers to fight the war on terrorism than North Dakota. To date, fifteen different North Dakota National Guard and Reserve units have been mobilized to active duty since the terrorist attacks on our nation which occurred on September 11, 2001. This year, I received many applications from good, qualified candidates throughout North Dakota. After reviewing them all, I have selected three outstanding North Dakota high school students for appointment to the U.S. military academies. scientistI have held the first two in a series of Action Summits to explore new areas of research and commercial opportunities for our region. These meetings focused on the growing biosciences and RFID technology areas. Future Action Summits will look at hydrogen energy, homeland security, nanotechnology and information security. The North Dakota Veterans History Project is an important effort to record and preserve the stories of North Dakota's war veterans for all time. I am proud to have helped put this project in motion in North Dakota, but it is the veterans who share their stories, and the hundreds of volunteers all across the state who help gather and record those stories that are making this project such an exciting reality. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan recently suggested that Social Security benefits be cut, because of sky-rocketing budget deficits. Those deficits were not created by senior citizens or by Social Security, but rather by a parade of huge taxcuts that primarily benefited the most wealthy Americans and big corporations. In 1993, when Congress was asked to approve the North American Free Trade Agreement, I was a leader in the fight against it.

Proponents of NAFTA claimed that the trade deal would generate 200,000 new jobs within a few years. I thought that, on the contrary, NAFTA would result in massive layoffs for U.S. workers. Unfortunately, a new report has proven that I was right. Click here for details.
